From fanciful rhymes to rich ballads to sober prayers, "The Sword and Pen" is a collection as diverse as the people who wrote it. A compilation of over 130 poems, drabbles, and six-word stories written by the members of Holy Worlds, this collection showcases the heart and spirit of writers dedicated to capturing their words for Christ. Join an adventure that flows from dragons and battles to love and death. No two poems are alike.

This is a book of poems, "drabbles" (stories in exactly a one hundred words), and "Hemingways" ("six-word-stories") written, edited, and produced by the members of the Holy Worlds forums, who are mostly young aspiring authors of speculative fiction. The poetry makes up most of the book.

Most of the six-word-stories are quite good, as are several of the drabbles. But the poetry ... There are a very small handful of poems that I would say are really pretty good. And aside from those, several of these young poets show a great deal of promise. But that's about all I can say in the book's favor.

As an amateur poet myself, I know how hard it is to write good poetry. It takes more than "having something to say" and saying it; it takes discipline and practice in the craft of fitting words together. But among young people who grew up on modern poets like Frost and e. e. cummings, whose mastery of the craft obscures the work on which that mastery was built in a way that the structured poetry of Shakespeare, Donne, or Dante does not, this lesson doesn't seem to be widely known. And so we have these poems.

Many of them have messages that, if not all exceedingly profound, are well worth hearing again. But what a poem "says" is not enough; a poem must be crafted to clearly present and even enhance that "message," using ordinary English grammar, a meter that keeps the pace moving at exactly the right speed, and a style that draws attention to the poem and its "message" rather than the style itself. And all but a very few of the poems in this volume fall down in at least one of these areas to at least some extent.

Like I said, several of the poems in this volume are good signs of promise for their authors. But promise is not enough.

I have enjoyed reading excerpts by these Christian young men and young women. Some of my extended family have enjoyed the funny "Hemingways".
These poems are refreshingly written from a perspective that transcends the generations. If you are looking for poems that range from the thought provoking to the amusing this book is a must buy. Enjoy!!
